Buttons or tilt? Testing arcade racer controls
Two of us had a running argument about whether tilt steering or on-screen buttons win in arcade racers, so we did the sensible thing and tested it properly on Neon Drift Circuit.
We each ran the same circuit twenty times with each control scheme and wrote down lap times and, more importantly, how frustrated we got. Buttons won on consistency almost every time. Tilt gave a couple of standout fast laps but far more spin-outs.
The takeaway is that tilt feels great when it works and terrible when it doesn't, which makes it a bad default. Buttons are boringly reliable, and reliability is what you want when you're chasing a clean lap.
That said, if you play propped on a table with both hands, tilt becomes much steadier. Control preference is partly about how you physically hold the phone, which is easy to forget.
