Why turn-based combat just works on a phone
I used to think mobile RPGs had to be fast and flashy to hold attention. Playing through a few good turn-based games this year completely changed my mind. When you can pause and think, the phone stops fighting against you.
The magic is that turn-based systems respect the way we actually use phones. You get interrupted, you put it down, you come back. Nothing punishes you for that. Compare that to a real-time game where a phone call means a game over.
Emberfall Saga is the one that sold me on it. Being able to line up the perfect turn order while waiting for a kettle to boil is a genuinely satisfying way to play. The depth is all there, but it meets you where you are.
If you've written off turn-based games as slow, try one with tight party building. The strategy fills the gaps that speed used to.
